We work hard to ensure that our farming practices are as sustainable as possible to protect the health of the soil, conserve water and boost biodiversity.
We are sustainable
Farm Sustainability Assessment
We use the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) to assess, improve and monitor sustainability on our farms. Built around a simple set of questions for farmers, the FSA has helped us to standardise farm assessment.
Pollinator Headlands Project
This hugely successful project involves sowing a mix of wildflower seeds to attract pollinating insects on ‘headlands’ (the strip of land at the end of each pea field) or on wet areas, where the ground conditions tend to be poor. Peas often struggle to grow where the soil has become wet and compacted; it results in fewer peas of poorer quality.
By planting a mix of wildflower seed in these areas, we not only attract pollinating insects but also help to maintain the health of the soil and provide a valuable habitat for various invertebrates.
Our pollinator headlands are buzzing with insect life during the summer months. They are monitored in conjunction with the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts to assess which species are present.
Following a successful pilot in 2021, we’ve expanded this project every year since and it continues to go from strength to strength.
