The Green Pea Company was formed in 2006 following the merger of several smaller pea growing groups that were all growing peas for Birds Eye.
However, the relationship between the farmers of East Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire and Birds Eye is a long and very successful one. It first began in 1967 and involved a pea growing group based in the North Ferriby area.
By 1968 another two groups had been formed in the Beverley and Walkington areas of East Yorkshire. Just three years later, three more had been established in the Driffield, Howdenshire and Holderness areas of East Yorkshire. In the early days, the peas were taken to a factory in Grimsby, but since 1981 they’ve all been processed at Birds Eye’s high-tech processing plant at Hessle, near Hull.
Over the years, improvements in the equipment and technology used to harvest and process the peas have increased both the quantity and quality of our crop.
